For the young in spirit
…And now, here I am this day, eighty-five years old. As yet I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both for going out and for coming in.” Joshua 14:11,12
Not many 85-year-olds can honestly make that statement today. But Caleb, the man speaking in the above verse, felt strong in body and spirit and was ready to overcome any battle that came his way, even at that age.
God promises to renew our youth like the eagle’s in Psalm 103:5. His blessings are for everyone, no matter their age. In this spirit, The Universal Church has started the Caleb Group, an active support group for people of 55 and over.
“There’s such a contrast between older people in the Bible and older people today,” said Bishop Renato Cardoso who’s organizing the Caleb Group nationwide. “We want people in that age group to have the same faith of Biblical characters like Caleb, Abraham, and Moses who reached the peak of their strength and achievements in their old age. When we use our faith our spirit gets stronger over time, not weaker.”
The Caleb Group consists of church volunteers of all ages who will offer support and motivation to over 55s, and organize fun activities for them too. Keeping company with a lonely grandmother whose relatives don’t visit as often as they used to anymore; making the trip to the store for groceries; picking up grandpa for church or a doctor’s visit when he needs a ride; helping them know their rights and get all the benefits they’re entitled to; encourage healthy eating habits — these are just a few examples of the kind of help the Group will provide.
But then there’s fun too. The Caleb Group will hold regular events ranging from picnics, going to the movies, and outings to Golden Oldies parties and much more!
Knowing that you are loved and cared for is a medicine that can cure many ills, from the time of our birth until the last years of our life. The Caleb Group is now here as a channel of this love and care.
